Gitty's story was a front page story in the New York Magazine on July 14 called 'Escape From the Holy Shtetl'. Gitty Grunwald fled the pious world of her mother to return to the secular city of her grandparents. There’s only one problem: The Satmars kept her daughter. A family saga of four generations of American Jews. Since the story has been told she has received many good and bad reactions. The people of the community are out to destroy her, paint her as a problem child, and are trying hard to take her daughter away because she is not religious. Gitty is a 23 year old single mother of a young beautiful daughter. She grew up in the Ultra Orthodox community of Kiryas Joel in Upstate New York. After getting married there, she got divorced and left the community. Changing her way of life and looking for a new beginning, Gitty has been battling and fighting for her daughter. We as her friends have decided to show her support, help her fight for her daughter, financially, emotionally and physically.
Gitty’s daughter is a young child who is in the middle of a hard and challenging fight between two parents with different directions in life. As a child she cannot speak or fight for herself. With all the battles that are facing her in the coming years, decisions she will have to make as she gets older, her mother’s love for her will never go away. We all want what’s best for her, considering both her parents and their life styles.
Gitty's family has given her little financial support. She has been struggling to get a job to provide for herself and her child. With the help of her friends she has put together $10,000 for lawyers and investigators to battle for her child.
